The desperation to cover up the so-called scandal,to avoid prying eyes and probing questions is brilliantly captured in the film The story revolves round the impact of society’s propensity to victimize the victim The refusal to stand up to evil assumes frightening proportions. An act of molestation becomes a lifetime of punishment. More than the heinous act of molestation,it is the insensitivity apathy and cowardice of society that sears our souls. It seems to engulf them and the families of those connected with the incident in a darkness they cannot escape. It takes just one incident for the world that Romita naively terms ‘interesting’ to crash. Her molestation by five goons and her rescue by Jhinuk has the effect similar to that of ink on a blotting paper. We may fill our lives with ‘props’ family, friends and distractions galore but all it takes is one “huff and puff” to blow it all away. Can the ‘houses’ we build withstand the storm of reality? The film forces us to confront this question. Will Romita’s marriage end ? Will Jhinuk marry? These questions hardly seem to matter. Both Romita and Jhinuk choose to embark out on their own not knowing what the future holds. Dahan (1997)a Bangla film directed by Rituporno Ghosh,is in my view, a hard-hitting film that posits the quintessential aloneness of its primary women characters as their ultimate destiny.
